After two failed marriages, forty-eight-year-old Rosie Atkisson struggles through the process of rebuilding her life with her husband, Jesse, in Southern California. But in 1994, the settled rhythm of her newfound comfort is interrupted by a tug in her heart when she encounters a haunting photo of another aging lady, the World War II vessel MS Restoration.

A special mission to transport Russian Jews from Sochi, Russia, to Haifa, Israel, means an adventure of a lifetime; does she dare pass up this dangerous assignment that will take her thousands of miles from her family and comfortable life? In spite of her fear of water and the unknown condition of the ship, Rosie thinks this might be the opportunity she’s been waiting for to serve God.

After surviving fourteen months on board the old ship—from a hurricane to a heart attack, from miracles to menopause, and now being held at gunpoint in the Haifa harbor—Rosie wonders if she will ever return to her own safe harbor.

Chapter One Within minutes of entering the Haifa harbor, an Israeli gunboat sped from the port and circled the World War II vessel. Two soldiers aimed their deck-mounted machine guns at the MS Restoration. An Israeli soldier shouted instructions through a loud speaker in his native Hebrew. The Captain of the MS Restoration responded over the ship's radio, "Please, speak to us in English!" Rosie instinctively pounded her fist on the rail. "Who do they think we are, terrorists?" Jesse touched her arm. "Rosie, calm down." "Do they think we're pirates? What are they going to do?" "Just calm down," her husband repeated, holding out his hand. "They won't make us jump overboard, will they? I don't have my life jacket!" "Rosie, you must get hold of yourself." Her mind raced as she gazed up at the man who had brought her on this unpredictable journey. Jesse's right, what's come over me? Rosie asked herself, all the time wishing she didn't have to go to the bathroom. The ship, the crew, the special passengers--the Russian Jews--had finally reached their destination. No more troubled waters. No more hurricanes. No more delays. On this hot July morning, they were home free, or so they thought. Rosie looked at the crew, poised and ready to hit the deck. "Isn't this ironic? We've traveled half way around the world on this ship, and this is the welcome we get." "Stop your engine!" the soldier shouted. Captain Alain immediately gave orders to the first engineer to halt the engine. Within seconds, they were stopped dead in the water. Rosie's stomach churned, so she hung her head over the side of the ship and let it rip. After wiping breakfast off her mouth with a hankie, she grabbed hold of Jesse's arm. Find your happy place, she told herself. Rosie had heard stories about people who had experienced close-call situations. Her seventy-year-old father once told her about the time his ship almost went down in the China Sea during the war. "At that moment, my whole life passed before me." Now, as the Israeli soldiers glared at the Restoration through their high-tech binoculars, Rosie knew this was her moment.

Since turning forty, Sharon Leaf has traveled to over fifteen countries, including living in Sweden while attending Bible college, traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, and volunteering on a World War II ship, whose sole purpose was to transport Russian Jews from the Black Sea to Israel. She received a degree in theology at sixty, proving that it's never too late to fulfill another dream. Lady and the Sea is Sharon’s debut novel. Sharon lives in South Carolina with her husband.

A 1994 adventure at sea with Rosie and the WWII ship, MS Restoration. I'm not a reader but I thoroughly enjoyed traveling with the two ladies through their rough seas, Hurricane Hector, and their exotic ports of call. The book builds faith while overcoming fear. Lady and the Sea is truly a story of miracles.

Loved the book. Couldn't wait to see how God provided & his timing in everything. Liked how the boat had a personality. Can't wait to see what the next adventure is.

I was so excited to finally have the opportunity to read The Lady and the Sea, since I have known the author for many years. I felt so blessed while reading this story of a truly amazing woman who because of her willingness to step out on faith and follow God's plan, she had the most incredible journey of love, faith, and spiritual growth. Rosie's relationship with the ship she came to love and identify with was so beautiful to read about, I felt like I was there with her. I enjoyed it so much I did not want it to end. I can't wait to read the next novel by Sharon.

Lady and the Sea is a delicious adventure that takes the reader on an energetic sail through the intertwining journeys of Rosie and the MS Restoration; two resilient ladies who find their lives re-purposed and set on new courses as they share a transforming journey from dry dock to crossing the open seas. I enjoyed traveling along with Rosie, giggling at her light-hearted humor one minute and peering over the rail in anticipation the next. It's a strong story I believe will nudge and tug at packed away dreams and encourage them out onto open decks to be refreshed by light sea breezes.

Lady and the Sea is a great journey of the heart. Rosie took the reader from her beautiful, yet also broken past to the restoration of a beautiful life. I could identify my life with not only Rosie's but that of the WWII warship, MS Restoration. It's an 'everybody' book but especially great for those of us 45-something which still have an adventure deep in our hearts that is still to be played. The book invites and beckons you to move toward that 'something' inside. A treasure.

I want to give the book the highest rating so I hope I went the right way, 5 being the highest!!! Sharon made me want to 'take the leap' into the tossing waves of life. The story of how she paralleled her life with that of the 'battle experienced, solid, work in progress' ship was so interesting and I couldn't wait to find out what happened to both! Encouraging, faith lifting and I certainly identified with everything from her fear, faith, and even needing to find a place to go to the bathroom!!! Loved the book, looking forward to next one!!! You go, Sharon!

From a young girl to a woman Rosie's love for life and God never waived. Her love story and her adventures keep you turning the pages and wanting more. What a beautiful true story! I can't wait to hear about the rest of her life.

This book is a wonderful true story of faith, self-discovery and a wonderful adventure. I found I was unable to put my Kindle down needing to find out what happened next. I was not ever disappointed with the next page or the next. I know I will further research to find more of "Resti's" adventures.

I was blessed to be part of the real life version of this story and I can honestly say that Sharon has done a fantastic job in penning a tale that helps to remind many of us about a truly amazing time in our lives. The story of how God is faithful and shows up when you need him at exactly the right time is one that we all need to hear! If you enjoy an good adventure, you will like this book...if you are looking to be challenged to pursue an adventure you will LOVE this book!

Sharon Leaf's novel, Lady and the Sea, is a wonderful story of a Christian couple committed to a special project of bringing Russian Jews to Israel. The story of Rosie and Jesse and the development of their faith, Rosie's in particular, is engrossing. The reader keeps reading because of the journey of faith. Will they reach their destination? The vignettes about the ship were wonderful as well as the humor throughout the novel.

Sharon Leaf has written a fabulous book! She fashions Rosie, the protagonist, in such a carefully crafted multi-faceted way that there is something in her personality for each and every one of us. For example, Rosie never feels safe anywhere except, to some degree, in her own little home with everything arranged just so. She keeps herself busy, and unthinking, by compulsively doing good. That way, she doesn't have to face her multiple fears. But God has a plan for Rosie. Before she realizes it, she is off on an adventure far beyond her dreams; one that forces her to recognize that God is the only safe harbour in trying times, not a harbour of her own making. And the result? Rosie grows in faith, wisdom, acceptance, grace and more. This is a truly inspirational book. I read it from cover to cover and loved it, especially for the psychological and emotional twists--so interesting. Congratulations, Sharon!

I was captivated by the very first paragraph all the way to the last written word. What a great story of adventure & following your dreams even though it may be tough at times in the end there is a great reward. Rosie is a beautiful inspiration of letting your faith be activated to overide your fears. I would highly recommend this book to everyone.

I loved this book. Reading each step of this journey kept me turning the pages with anticipation. I loved seeing the hand of God and love and care He has for His children. I knew how it should end, but how it got there was a pleasure to read.

From the first page to the last, I was there! Having just turned 89 years old, I now "travel" through books. I was amazed at the courage that Rosie showed proving that we are never too old when God calls us for His work. I became Rosie as I read descriptions of fear of water, inability to swim and peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I am in love with Rosie's Cowboy. Great reading.
