Lukas’ Maiden Voyage was written as a fable in which animals speak and act like people. The target audience ranges from nine years old to teenagers, even to moms and dads who may take delight in reading this story to their young children. The story revolves around the Passover celebration and Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, as seen through the eyes of the young burro that carried him.

Intended for all Christians who grew up hearing about the life of Christ’s ministry, this story centers around a small, crippled colt that has been bullied his entire life by two Arabian stallions, who find ways to taunt the burro and make his life miserable. The name of the colt is Lukas, and the antagonistic twin brothers are Nimb and Obus. The colt’s greatest wish is to have someone come to Jethro’s stables and choose him for a ride. Since the little donkey was born with a weak back and a crippled leg, no one ever has. The young burro’s life changes dramatically when Lukas unknowingly meets Christ and is chosen by the Messiah to be ridden on the most important journey the world will ever know. Since he’s never been ridden, this becomes Lukas’s maiden voyage.

An excerpt from the book….

“Hey, Lukas, we heard you carried your first rider yesterday,” snorted Nimb snidely as he and the herd approached. “And someone actually picked you?! How’d the blind man do?” The entire herd burst into uproarious laughter.
“Yes, I did…and he wasn’t blind!” the young colt said defiantly.
Obus chimed in, “Yeah, well, uh, word has it he was…a prince,” he said as the snickers continued.
“Oh, sure, most of the princes and kings I carry wear ragged old cloaks with holes in them to keep them cool,” Nimb quipped. “He probably didn’t want anyone to know who he was for fear someone might steal the majestic wooden stick he uses as a staff!”
“He told me he was on a mission for his Father,” Lukas said.
“Did he?” snapped Obus. “When did you start talking with humans? Animals…even thoroughbreds like us…can’t speak with humans and YOU can?”
“He did talk with me and I talked with him, because he’s kind and wonderful!”
“Well, now, that’s different! Let’s see….if he’s a prince, his father must be a king!” Obus said, flashing a phony smile.
“I didn’t say he was a prince,” Lukas answered. “I said he was a kind man who dearly loved his father and was trying to help him.”
“Okay, Lukas, okay….and, uh, if the blind prince comes back for a second ride, uh, tell him to say hello for us to his father, the king! Hey, now that you carry royalty, we’d better stop all the pranks ‘cause we don’t want to get in trouble! Since there’s another one of your kind, a runt, living with the old workhorses, we’ll just keep havin’ fun with him. And wouldn’t you know it? He’s got a problem, too!” Nimb said as the laughter continued.

Lukas’ Maiden Voyage is a page-turner for children, teens and even adults. As you read the book the plot appears to be taking the reader in one direction….yet will quickly go in another. Each chapter has a common thread running through it; whether being bullied because of physical infirmities, laughed at for always wanting to do the “right” thing or for being scared or anxious….all relate to the human condition.
The primary reason for scripting this fable was to have the readers, whatever their age, want to get more involved in reading the Bible and experience the written Word of God, perhaps in a fresh, new way.
As you read this synopsis I hope your interest is aroused enough that you are now considering the next step.
If you are looking for a gift for a child or teenager who truly enjoys reading and loves mysteries with surprise endings, Lukas’ Maiden Voyage will more than measure up.
